About Arcan-l
ARCAN-l, a listserv managed by the Canadian Council of Archives, is provided for the discussion of archival issues and interests of particular relevance to Canadian Archives and archivists. It provides a forum for the exchange of ideas and information amongst Canadian archivists, archives staff and other heritage professionals. This list is also open to exchange with colleagues from other countries. As of January 2026, at the request of the list host (University of Alberta), ARCAN-L is now a moderated list. Submissions are reviewed during business hours, and delays in posting may occur. An archives of past messages is available to subscribers. Subscribers may prefer to subscribe to the Digest version of ARCAN-L.
Guiding Principles
We want ARCAN-L, our listserv community, to be a welcoming and constructive environment. Individuals, institutions and organizations involved in archival, information, heritage and cultural management are invited to use the listserv. All communications must accordingly reflect appropriate content and standards of professionalism. The administrator relies upon subscribers to ensure that their listserv or discussion group submissions are appropriate. The administrator and/or hosting institution accept no responsibility for the opinions and information posted by subscribers.
To ensure the integrity of our listserv, we ask all subscribers to agree to the following code of conduct and adhere to established policies when participating on the listserv: ARCAN-l Listserv Community Code of Conduct and Policies
Subscribe to Arcan-l
To subscribe to the mailing list, please visit the Arcan-l information page hosted by the University of Alberta via their Mailman service.
Once on the page, scroll down to the “Subscribing to Arcan-l” section, where you can register by entering your email address and name, and setup your password.

To post a message to all the list members, send email to arcan-l@mailman.srv.ualberta.ca.
Message set to that email address are moderated.
Managing your account
To manage your account options, visit the Arcan-l information page and scroll down to the bottom section called “Arcan-l Subscribers”. Under the line “To unsubscribe from Arcan-l, get a password reminder, or change your subscription options enter your subscription email address:” enter the email address used to subscribe to the list, and click the “Unsubscribe or edit options” button.
